ENG 102 - English Composition II: Introduction to Literature

Course description:

The goal of this course is to build on those skills you have learned in Composition I (EN 101), including process-based writing and research methods. You will learn close-reading techniques to further develop your critical thinking and writing skills through an examination of selected texts comprised of poetry, short stories, and the novel, including a graphic novel. We will utilize the writing process, which means that we will outline, draft, write, proofread, edit, revise and rewrite our essays/work.

 

Course theme:

In this course, we will explore meanings of self-determination and the American Dream in relation to the experience of “becoming American” in literature from the recent past to the present. We will draw upon various methodologies to help you access and think critically about modes of literary analysis. These methodologies will include but are not limited to, historical context and critical theories such as feminism, to examine the struggle for self-definition and identity construction as these writers problematize notions of race, class, gender and genre.

Grading Policy:

My grading of submitted work will be based on (1) critical response to a text; (2) explanation and support of ideas; (3) organization of a response that has a clear beginning, middle, and end; and two elements of language use: (4) sentence construction and word choice, and (5) grammar, usage, and mechanics.

 

Participation: Short Paper & Quizzes: 30%

Essay # 1 (Research Paper): 20%

Essay # 2 (in-class midterm): 15%

Essay # 3 (Literary Analysis): 20%

Essay # 4 (In-class final): 15%

In-class presentation (optional)

 

Please note to be eligible to pass this course you must submit all required essays.

 

*Revision is a requirement of this course, and all written work must be revised and rewritten before a final submission in order to consider the assignment completed. It is expected that students attend the Writing Center for tutoring as often as necessary, according to the student’s need and the instructor’s recommendations. Failure to submit drafts when due will result in a ½ grade deduction for each draft not submitted.All previous drafts must accompany your final submission of any paper assignment.

 

All grades with a “D” or lower, except the diagnostic and final must be corrected or revised. Essays that receive a “C-“or lower may be revised, with a one-week turnaround.

 

Classroom Guidelines

 

  • Be considerate and turn off your cell phones before our class starts
  • Do not eat and sleep in class
  • Do not speak when somebody else is speaking, or engage in private conversations
  • Be respectful of each other and me, which includes appreciating our classroom’s diversity

Please note that your behavior and participation in class is as important as the work you submit. If you disrupt class sessions I may and will ask you to change seating assignments. Failure to comply with this request will result in a failing class participation grade. These guidelines are in place to foster a productive learning environment where students are able to participate fully in creating a learning community.

 

Late work: 

To a very large extent your success in class depends on completing your writing assignments on time. It will be your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate materials and access to printers to complete your work in a timely manner. If you know you will be absent on a class deadline you can submit your work to me early. All late work will be penalized by a 1/2 letter grade, (A to A-, B to B-, etc) for every day it is late. Work more than a week late may receive a failing grade.

 

Plagiarism:

This course is taught in compliance with QCC's  Academic Integrity Policy. Students who submit plagiarized work, in part or in full, or commit other acts of academic dishonesty, will receive a failing grade and may face more serious penalties articulated by the Academic Standings Committee. Attendance is mandatory. Official QCC policy allows no more than four absence
hours no matter what your reason is for being absent. Please note the first week of
classes counts towards attendance. If you miss more than four hours of class, and are
frequently late for class you may receive an F for the course. If you have a valid reason to miss class you will need to bring written documentation to the class following your
absence.

  •   Excessive absences cannot be made up by accumulating extra assignments      near the end of the term.
  • Absence from class does not excuse students from knowing what was covered in class, or what assignments were covered in class. It is strongly suggested that students exchange phone numbers/e-mail addresses with other students in class, whom they can call to find out what was covered and assigned in a missed class.
  • Be punctual. Lateness is highly disruptive. Every two latenesses will count as one absence. If you are not in class when I take attendance you are late. It will be your responsibility to make sure you are added to the attendance roster at the end of class by informing your instructor.
